To make it super easy for event organisers and keep cash transactions secure, we use PayPal to manage the online payment process. Anyone with a PayPal account can collect money for paid events on Classlist - this might be a member of the PTA organising a Quiz Night or a Class Admin requesting contributions towards a teacher's gift, but equally it could be a parent organising a private social event that needs payment, such as a restaurant deposit or theatre tickets.
Classlist does not charge any fees, but PayPal do charge a commission and transaction fee.
How PayPal fees work
Paypal fees are 3.4% + 20p per transaction, unless you have a PayPal charity account, in which case the fee is 1.4% + 20p per transaction. This fee is deducted from the ticket price, parents buying tickets do not have to pay the extra individually.
Take the following examples:
Sarah buys four tickets for her family for a pantomime trip, a private event organised by another parent friend for Year 3 children. The tickets cost £5 each, totaling £20.
Sarah will only pay £20, and can pay either with a debit/credit card or using her own PayPal account.
PayPal will deduct 3.4 % of £20, which is 68p, plus a further 20p transaction charge, totaling 88p.
Mary buys two tickets to a summer barbecue organised by the PTA, which is registered as a charity and has a Paypal charity account. Tickets are £5 each, totaling £10.
Mary will pay £10 and PayPal will deduct 1.4 % of £10, which is 14p, plus 20p, totaling 34p. Again she can pay either with a debit/credit card or using her own PayPal account.
Mary then wishes to buy another two tickets. This counts as a separate transaction, so she will be charged another 14p+20p on that transaction.
In both these examples the event organisers will sightly lose out because they didn't take the PayPal charges into account when setting the ticket price in the event.
Tip: When you organise a paid event, calculate and incorporate the Paypal fee in the advertised ticket price, so that the amount you receive via Paypal after their commission covers the actual cost of the ticket!
Classlist does not charge any fees: Classlist is a completely free service.
