Classlist is a leading tool for building strong parent communities, improving interaction from parent to parent, school to parent and parent to school. Nevertheless, many people have concerns or are sceptical about social media in general. It is important to respect people's feelings on this subject, but you can at least provide reassurance that Classlist is safe to use, whether it is your Head, a PTA officer or an individual parent who has doubts.
Such concerns often break down into two main categories:
- Inappropriate content
- Security
Classlist's mission is to provide you with the best possible tools for creating a safe, secure and friendly environment in which a community can flourish.
Inappropriate Content
Classlist Central has not yet had any reports of problems regarding inappropriate behaviour on Classlist. We believe this is for a number of reasons:
- The name and logo of the school at the top of all screens on Classlist remind users that the content should be 'family friendly' and broadly relating to matters which might be discussed at the school gates. Other social media sites do not necessarily foster such a direct association.
- Parents know that content can be monitored and removed if necessary, while inappropriate behavior may result in the user being blocked from Classlist (ie their account is deactivated).
- Classlist acts as a closed school community which mirrors real life. There is no anonymity and parents know one another. Posted content cannot be found in a Google search.
Each parent agrees to our Terms and Conditions when they sign up, and this includes behavioural/user guidelines for members. Among other things these state that Classlist must not be used to post discourteous content or complaints about the school, parents or members of staff.
Classlist Ambassadors have the ability to monitor all content posted by their Classlist site's users, and have the power to remove any content deemed unfit in accordance with our rules. If any content ever requires removal, the Ambassador can simply explain that:
'The content you have posted breaks Classlist guidelines'
Rather than
'I found your post offensive'
This distances the Ambassador from a personal opinion and can be backed up with the Terms and Conditions from Classlist Central, thus helping to reduce potential hostility.
Data Security
Data security is as big a concern for Classlist Central as it is for you. As parents themselves, the founders understand how vital it is we keep our children safe. For this reason, every parent who signs up to Classlist must be approved by an already existing member.
Our data is kept on secure servers that use the same security technology as world-leading banks, so you can rest assured that everything remains secure.
