The Contacts page allows you to find other parents (or their children) who are registered on Classlist at your school, and operates in accordance with GDPR and the privacy settings you select. You can filter based on the school Groups which are automatically populated when parents register their child to a Year and/or Class.
Your Contacts page is identified by an icon like a photo ID card. You can find it in the navigation sidebar on a computer, or in the shortcuts on a mobile.
From the Contacts page you can
- filter by school groups which you are part of (class or year)
- search for any individual by name
- view the profile of parents in your school groups
- private message any individual
- switch to map view instead of a list
- invite other parents to join
Contacts page on the app: the default view is 'Whole School' and parents are listed alphabetically, with their children listed in grey text under the parent's name.
The little blue leaf indicates whether the parent has invited anyone else to join. Tap on a speech bubble to send that contact a private message, or tap the pin to view their location on a map (if you have opted into the Parent Map). Next to your own name you will see a pencil icon instead of a speech bubble; this is a shortcut to your profile where you can edit your details.
Finding Contacts - filter by school group
As well as providing a listing of everyone registered with Classlist in your school, you can filter to view a personalised list of parents and children who are in the same school groupings as you. When the list is filtered, one parent will see a different list of names to another parent if the children of the two parents are in different school groups.
The default view for this page is the whole school. To filter and view only those parents who are also members of one of your school groups, click on the dropdown filter menu at the top of the page. In the image below the user has children in Reception, Year 02 and Year 04, so he can choose to view either a specific class from one of those years, or the whole year group. He is about to filter by 'Reception', so only the parents with children in that year group will be shown. If the user selects 'Rb Mr Grandison' instead, only members of that class group will be displayed.
Finding Contacts - search by name (child or parent)
If you're looking for a specific person by name, you can use the search tool to find them quickly; just tap the magnifying glass at the top of the page.
Once you've entered a name, or part of a name, the page will automatically bring up all the contacts with any version of that name. So for instance if you enter 'Ben', the search will find any person called Ben or Benjamin as well as Reuben or a surname such as Tony Benn.
The search function can also be used to search for a child, bringing up the child's name linked to his/her parent. Perfect for when you can't quite remember the first name of your son/daughter's friend's Mum!
View the profile of someone in one of your school groups
The profile can display information such as pupils' names and classes, address, phone number, family contacts etc, only if the parent has chosen to share such data. The default setting is to share data with your class and year group, but you can change your privacy settings at any time. Parents who are not in the same school groups as you will not see your data unless you have chosen to share it. To view a profile you can either search and select an individual as above, or tap on their name in the main contacts list.
Please note that the Classlist Member Guidelines include "Respect fellow class parents, which includes not using their contact details or Classlist for marketing or professional purposes. Don’t share information from the website without the author’s permission."
NB: You cannot view the profile of a parent unless you are a member of the same group/s as them. If your child is not registered to a specific school group (eg if he/she is registered as Unassigned), you will not be able to view anyone's profile. Other parents may choose not to share personal data.
Send a Private Message
Tap on the message icon (see image below - the private message icon is on the right) next to any name to open the private message function. Click here for more information on private messaging.
View results on a map
You can switch to a map view if you prefer; just tap 'map' instead of 'list' at the top. Remember you have to be opted in yourself to view the parent map, and other parents may have chosen not to opt into the parent map. If they have opted in, there will be a pin icon next to their name (see image above - the map pin is on the left). Click here for more information on the parent map.
Invite other parents
To invite other parents tap on the friends icon which appears at the top of the page next to the search icon. Click here to find out more about inviting other parents. When a parent has invited another to join, a little blue leaf will appear next to his/her name on the contacts list. The number show how many people the parent has invited.
