Notifications let you know when another member has added messages and content to your Classlist community in your groups or personal to you.
The good news is that Classlist's notifications can be highly customised. You can choose
- which type of notifications you want to receive. (Eg posts, announcements, events, private messages etc)
- how you want to receive them (via the app and/or by email)
- how many you want to receive. You can choose to be notified of every comment on every post in your groups if you like that, or just notified of new posts. You can also choose to have just one 'digest' email a day or a week summarising everything relevant to you. You can even choose to receive no emails or app notifications at all if you would prefer to look at Classlist yourself to see if there is anything new - though you may miss out if you don't have any reminders to check!
Classlist structures conversations in groups as 'posts' and 'comments' - so you may choose to be notified of posts (new topics) but not notified of comments on those posts.
Having this choice makes Classlist notifications easier to handle than WhatsApp notifications for instance, where comments are in a continuous flow, and you either need to have notifications on or off for groups. Schools tell us some parents are overwhelmed by WhatsApp notifications, and they prefer the choice Classlist gives.
Classlist app notifications are in the form of banners on your phone's home screen, a red badge/bell on the app icon and on the menus on Classlist - as with other apps.
You can change your Classlist notification settings so that you get alerted how you want via app notifications and emails.
NB It is best to have Classlist notifications turned on in your phone's general settings and then use the Classlist notifications page on your Profile to customise what you do and don't want to receive. (If you turn off Classlist notifications via your phone's settings then you won't receive any notifications at all as banners on your phone's home screen or red badges on the Classlist icon).
See further down for more information on changing your notification settings.
Tip: We encourage members to use the Classlist app, as it is quicker to read notifications than via email notifications. Find it in the App Store and Google Play.
Notifications within the app
Notifications appear on the Classlist app icon on the home screen of your mobile.
Within the app they show up on the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen.
You can change your settings so that you no longer receive notifications for categories of content you don't want to be alerted about (see below). You will still be able to view this content when you look on Classlist.
The home page shows your groups and activity in those. The 'bell' icon shows a list of all your new notifications individually with links to each.
Tip: Remember that the Home page All Activity Feed contains all the latest activity relevant to you and your groups, so the quickest way to check all your notifications is to scroll through All Activity (find it via the home icon).
If you have enabled Classlist notifications on your phone's own settings you will get a banner notification and/or a sound on your phone when you get a Classlist notification.
Important: If you aren't receiving push notifications and want to, you may need to check your phone's notification settings are not clashing with your settings in the app. If you opted out of notifications on your phone when you first downloaded the app that will override the Classlist notification settings. To receive push notifications you will need to turn these on in your phone's settings as well, even if you you have opted in to receive notifications in your settings on Classlist.
Edit your phone's notifications settings to allow Classlist notifications:
On an iPhone go to Settings > Notifications > Classlist > 'Allow notifications'.
On Android go to Settings (cog at top) > Apps > Application Manager > Classlist > 'Show Notifications'
Notifications on a computer
On a computer your notifications appear within Classlist as a red number badge over the notification icon in the left hand navigation sidebar. The image below shows the notifications summary page with unread content highlighted in colour in the list. Click on the item summary to be taken to the page where the post, announcement or event content can be read in full. You can read notifications from this summary list individually, or mark them all as read by tapping on the button at top right.
Changing your notification settings
To change your notification settings, go to your profile and tap 'Notification Settings'.
The notifications page of your profile allows you to opt in or out of emails and badge/bell notifications generated from different types of activity on the site.
You can set notifications on or off for emails and app notifications for each category of communication: group posts and comments, messages, private events, community events, announcements and whole school posts.
By default, you will receive email notifications for all new communications on Classlist, except for Marketplace posts, which are included in the Weekly Digest rather than being sent individually. Whole school posts are an optional feature which can be turned on or off by your admin team.
To change your settings, go to your Profile and click on Notifications Settings. There are separate sections for App notifications and email notifications, giving you full control over what you receive.
App Notification settings
Group Post Activity - You will receive notifications of new posts in your groups, and if you comment on or like a post you will be notified about all subsequent comments on that post. [This was the original Classlist setting].
Auto notifications on group posts - We now have a new additional option for members, enabling you to receive all comments on all posts in your groups automatically. Some parents like to follow everything automatically. If you have this setting ticked you will receive you will receive app notifications of all posts in your groups, and also of all comments on any posts in your groups, not just those you commented on.
Email Notification settings
You'll be emailed when someone creates a post in your groups, and if someone comments on your own posts. You won't be emailed if someone comments after you on someone else's post.
To reduce email traffic for you we have:
- introduced a daily digest email of the activity relevant to you today, and in that you can see whether there have been subsequent replies after your comments, or you can look on Classlist itself.
- if we detect you are using the Classlist app we will opt you out of emails for posts and comments. You will receive app notifications of these, and can check the daily digest email for any you missed.
If you wish to follow subsequent replies at the time they are sent please use the Classlist app.
We optimise the digests we send you, and so if you aren't opening the daily digest more than twice a week we will stop sending it to you, so that you just receive the Weekly digest on Thursdays instead.
We do not send a lot of email updates to members from us here at Classlist, but we do send occasional tips to help you make the most of Classlist in the early days as a parent member or as an admin member. After that you would only hear from us intermittently, such as if there is an important update. We hope you will find our updates useful and recommend you stay opted in to receive those.
Duplicate email notifications
NB: if you are receiving duplicate email notifications from Classlist it is probably because you have registered 2 accounts by mistake, or were invited to one email address and registered with another. Click here to find out how to fix it.
