Notifications let you know when another member has added messages and content to your Classlist community. For example a post to your classes/groups, a private message or an event.
The good news is that Classlist's notification settings can be highly customised via your Profile. You can choose
- which type of notifications you want to receive.
- how you want to receive them (app and/or email)
-
how many you want to receive.
- You can choose to be notified of every comment on every post in your groups, or just be notified of new posts but not comments.
- You can also choose to have a summary 'digest' email daily or weekly or to turn this off.
- You can even choose to receive no emails or app notifications at all if you would prefer to look at Classlist yourself to see if there is anything new - though you may miss out if you don't have any reminders to check!

Customising your phones notification settings
Push Notifications
Classlist app notifications are in the form of banners which appear on your phone's home screen (push notifications) and also show as a red badge/dot with a number on the app icon.
If you have enabled Classlist notifications on your phone's own settings you will have a choice over how the banner is displayed and if you want a badge and/or a ding sound when you get a Classlist notification. This can be customised in your phone's settings.
It is best to have Classlist notifications turned on in your phone's general notification settings and then use the Classlist notifications page on your Classlist Profile to turn off/customise what you do and don't want to receive. (If you turn off Classlist notifications via your phone's settings then you won't receive any notifications at all as banners on your phone's home screen or red badges on the Classlist icon).
Edit your phone's notifications settings to allow app notifications:
On an iPhone go to Settings > Notifications > Classlist > 'Allow notifications'.
On Android go to Settings (cog at top) > Apps > Application Manager > Classlist > 'Show Notifications'
You can choose whether to receive push notifications as banners and badges, with sounds or not.
It's also possible in your phone settings to choose how the banner messages display on the screen, this would apply to all messages from any app and on iphone can be set under Settings > Notifications.
Notifications within Classlist
Within Classlist, a red dot shows up when you have a new notification.
You can change your settings so that you no longer see notifications for categories of content you don't want to be alerted about (see below). You will still be able to view this content when you look in the activity feed on Classlist, but you won't see a red badge or receive a notification.
Notifications list
Clicking on the 'bell' notifications icon shows a list of all your new notifications individually with links to each. Unread content is highlighted in blue in the list. You can read notifications from this summary list individually, or 'mark all as read'.
Home Page
On the Home Page you can see all your own groups listed, and if there is new activity in a group there will be some red writing under the group name saying something like '1 new post'. We also show the the time of the last activity for the group.
How we show posts and comments
Classlist structures conversations in groups as 'posts' and 'comments' to keep all comments on a topic together (which is slightly different to WhatsApp where the group is a continuous stream generally, which some people don't like).
The default Classlist app notification setting is that you will receive app notifications of all comments on all posts in your groups. If you want to reduce notifications you could choose to be notified of new posts (new topics), but not notified of comments on those posts, unless you commented yourself.
Following or unfollowing a post
If you comment on something, then you will automatically 'follow' that post or announcement, (even if you have opted in your settings not to receive comments on all other posts). 'Following a post' means you will be notified if others comment after you, because you may want to comment again.
If you don't wish to be notified of subsequent comments on any particular post you can 'unfollow' that post.
- on desktop click on the bell icon underneath the individual post. That will change the bell from blue (you were following the post) to white (you are not following the post).
- on mobile click on the 3 dots menu at the top right of the post and switch the notifications off on the toggle.
You won't receive any more notifications of comments on that post.

App Notification settings
The app notifications settings are in 4 sections
- Year/class/group activity
- Whole School activity
- Personal activity (private messages and events)
- Admin activity (if relevant)
New Post Activity - You will receive notifications of new posts in your groups, and if you comment on or like a post then you will start following that thread. If following the thread you will be notified about all subsequent comments on that post.
You can unfollow the thread by clicking on the blue bell under the post, and then you won't be notified of any further comments on the same post.
'All comments' options - There are options enabling you to receive all comments on all posts or announcements in your groups or to the whole school. Some parents like to follow everything automatically. If you have these settings ticked you will receive you will receive app notifications of all comments on any posts in your groups, not just those you commented on.
New Marketplace notifications option - want to be the first to know someone is giving away some concert tickets? Now you can opt in to push and in-app notifications for Marketplace.
If you opt out of an in-app notification type, you won't receive a push notification and you won't be notified on the bell within Classlist. But you can still view a post in your class/group.
Email Notification settings
By default, when you join Classlist you will receive email notifications for all new communications on Classlist, except for Marketplace posts, which are included in the Daily and Weekly Digest emails rather than being sent individually.
You'll be emailed when someone creates a new post in your groups, and if someone comments on your own posts. You won't be emailed if someone comments after you on someone else's post.
To reduce email traffic for you we have a daily digest email of the activity relevant to you today, and in that you can see whether there have been subsequent replies after your comments, or you can look on Classlist itself.
If you wish to follow subsequent comments at the time they are sent please use the Classlist app.
Other email settings
We optimise the digests we send you, and so if you aren't opening the daily digest more than twice a week we will stop sending it to you, so that you just receive the Weekly digest on Thursdays instead.
Classlist updates
We do not send a lot of email updates to members from us here at Classlist, but we do send occasional tips to help you make the most of Classlist in the early days as a parent member or as an admin member. After that you would only hear from us intermittently, such as if there is an important update. We hope you will find our updates useful and recommend you stay opted in to receive those.

If you need Help please contact our friendly help team by creating a Help Ticket (top right of Help Centre).
Trouble shooting
Important: If you aren't receiving push notifications and want to, you may need to check your phone's notification settings are not clashing with your settings in the app. If you opted out of notifications on your phone when you first downloaded the app that will override the Classlist notification settings. To receive push notifications you will need to turn these on in your phone's settings as well, even if you you have opted in to receive notifications in your settings on Classlist.
Duplicate email notifications
NB: if you are receiving duplicate email notifications from Classlist it is probably because you have registered 2 accounts by mistake, or were invited to one email address and registered with another. Click here to find out how to fix it.
